Flax Seed and Pregnancy
Flax provides fats that are precursors for brain building. This is especially important at the stage of life when a child's brain grows the fastest, in utero and during infancy. A prudent mom should consider supplementing her diet with a daily tablespoon of flax oil during her pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
Here is one woman’s account of taking Flax Seed during her pregnancy:
"Try FLAX SEED! With my first pregnancy I had to stop wearing my wedding ring, as well as my regular shoes when I was only 5 months along due to the swelling. I'm now 7 months along with my second pregnancy and haven't had that problem at all! I attribute it to the flax seed I've been eating. I started taking it because of the omega-3-fatty-acids which my doctor recommended for brain development, but flax seed is also beneficial for lowering blood pressure, which has a relationship to swelling. My blood pressure was elevated although not dangerously during my first pregnancy, but it is exactly the same this pregnancy compared to when I'm not pregnant. You can buy flax seed at Sprouts, Whole Foods, Wild Oats, or other health food stores. I get the whole seeds, grind them up in a coffee grinder, store them in the freezer, then put a spoonful each day on my cereal or in yogurt. Try it!" -- Deborah
