Flaxseed Side Effects and Safety

Other than the possibility of allergic reaction in susceptible individuals, no serious Side effects of Flax seed are associated with consumption of normal amounts of flax seed.

When large amounts are consumed however (25g of fibre per day), abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea and flatulence may result.

Flaxseed may slow down the absorption of oral medications or other nutrients if taken at the same time. Try to avoid taking flaxseed at the same time of day as medications and other supplements.

Safety

Flaxseed is generally considered safe to eat. Nonetheless, a healthy care provider should be consulted before making any major dietary changes, especially if you are pregnant or lactating, have a chronic illness or are taking prescription medication. There are some safety concerns associated with excessive flaxseed consumption, primarily due to its content of cyanogenic glycosides and polysaturated fatty acids.

It is not recommended that polyunsaturated fatty acids be consumed in excess of 8-10 % of total calories (1g of fat provides 9 calories). A high intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids may reduce blood clotting. It may be unadvisable to consume flaxseed oil while taking other blood thinning agents (prescription anti-coagulants, over the counter pain relievers like aspirin or Ibuprofen, vitamin E) in the 2-3 weeks prior to surgery of if you who have a blood clotting disorder. Other herbs/nutraceuticals that may alter blood clotting include garlic, ginseng, ginkgo, ginger, feverfew, fish oil, hempseed oil, borage oil and evening primrose oil.

Since Flax seed increases stool bulk and frequency of defecation, it is not recommended for those with bowel obstruction, irritable bowel syndrome or diverticular disease.
