Ground Your Flax Seed with a Grinder
Flax seed Grinders
In order to extract the most benefit from your whole flax seeds you must grind them fresh, just before using. If they are eaten whole the seeds will just pass through your system. Flaxseed grinders are available in specialty food shops and catalogues, but we find that an inexpensive coffee grinder will also easily process the seeds easier into a useable powder which is easy to sprinkle on salads, and many recipes—you will know that they are ground to the right consistency by the smooth whirring sound your grinder will make when done.
Ground Flax seeds
Ground Flax seeds have the consistency of wheat germ with a deep nutty flavour. Ground Flax seed is the same as Milled Flax Seeds. Health benefits are best when the seed is ground before eating, otherwise the seed will pass through the system undigested. The advantage of consuming the ground flaxseed versus the oil is that ground flax seed contains fiber and lignans. See the benefits of ground flax seed. It is the combination of all of the elements of flaxseed that are beneficial.
Once ground, the seeds lend a slightly sweet nutty flavour wherever they're used. Add them to baked goods from muffins to yeast breads. Stir ground flaxseeds into a smoothie, shake, yoghurt, or a tall glass of OJ. Coarsely ground flaxseeds added to a cookie batter will give the impression that there are nuts in the batter. Sprinkle ground flaxseeds over a late-night bowl of frozen yoghurt or granola and you can even feel virtuous.
How Much Daily Intake of Flax seed is recommended?
It is recommended an average serving of 2-3 tablespoons of whole seeds daily, milled as described. Because flaxseed fiber expands in your stomach, be sure you drink plenty of water throughout the day to aid digestion.
What should I remember about grinding and storing my flaxseeds?
Flaxseed can be stored virtually indefinitely in their full seed form. Once the seeds have been ground, the flax meal should be stored in an airtight container either in the refrigerator, if it will be used in just a matter of days, or it can be stored in the freezer for several months. Often, it is more convenient to grind up a larger quantity of flax in your coffee grinder and store it in the freezer. It can be used straight from the freezer. Further Flax Seed Facts
